Nora Toastmasters is a community club, open to all who are interested! We pride our club on being welcoming, supportive, well-run, and diverse. Our club includes an array of new and experienced Toastmasters; many of us are native to Indianapolis, while others have origins spanning the globe.
Newcomers are always welcome at our meetings. Visitors are never required to speak, but they are always welcome to join right in! Contact us for more information, or just stop by our next meeting -- We look forward to meeting you!
Nora Toastmasters was founded February 1st, 1953 as a local Indianapolis chapter of Toastmasters International. Toastmasters itself began in 1924 when Dr. Ralph C. Smedley assembled the first members and founded the first Toastmasters club. Their purpose was to form a club to afford practice and training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings, and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members.
Today, Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization which gives its members the opportunity to develop and improve their public speaking and leadership abilities through local club meetings, training seminars and speech contests. Nora Toastmasters is home to members of all levels of experience, ranging from our newest Toastmasters to some of the most experienced and decorated Toastmasters in Indiana.
Experienced professionals and beginning speakers alike can benefit from our practical, face-to-face learning program. Whether you're speaking to the board of directors, your customers, your co-workers or your kids, Toastmasters can help you do it better. You'll learn and practice in a friendly, comfortable environment with people who are there for the same reason you are -- to become better communicators.
In Toastmasters, members learn through experience: working with and speaking in front of others in a supportive environment. We do this primarily at our weekly, 90-minute meetings. An ordinary Nora Toastmasters club meeting is attended by about 20 members, and our meeting agenda is designed to give everyone an opportunity to participate. At every Nora Toastmasters meeting, members get the chance to organize and conduct meetings, perform in a variety of meeting roles, deliver impromptu speeches, present prepared speeches, and offer constructive feedback to other members.
